Title: Authorizes Leave for Academic Activities

Vote to pass a bill that authorizes parents or legal guardians to take leave for academic activities, effective August 10, 2016.

Highlights:

  • Authorizes an “employee” to take no more than 6 hours of leave in a month and no more than 18 hours of leave in an academic year for the purpose of attending an “academic activity” for the employee’s child (Sec. 1). 
  • Defines “employee” as any person, except independent contractors, domestic servants, seasonal worker, and farm and ranch laborers, working for hire who is the parent or legal guardian of a child enrolled in school in any grade from kindergarten through 12th grade (Sec. 1).
  • Defines “academic activity” as a parent-teacher conference, special education services meeting, dropout prevention meeting, attendance meeting, truancy meeting, or disciplinary meeting (Sec. 1).
  • Requires the employee to provide the employer with a notice of need for leave at least 1 calendar week in advance of the academic activity (Sec. 1).
  • Authorizes the employee and the employer to come to an agreement to take paid leave to attend an academic activity in exchange for working the paid leave hours taken later on in the same work week (Sec. 1).
  • Authorizes the employer to limit the ability of an employee to take leave if a person’s health or safety is endangered by the leave or the employee’s leave halts service or production (Sec. 1).
  • Exempt an employer who employs less than 50 employees (Sec. 1).
  • Requires a school district to notify parents and the community at large of their ability to take leave (Sec. 1).
