Vote to pass a bill that prohibits local governments from issuing photo identification cards.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits local governments from issuing or expanding funds for the purpose of issuing photo identification cards (Sec. 2). 
  • Exempts the certain cases from the provisions of this bill including, but not limited to, the following cases (Sec. 2):
    • If an employee or elected official needs an identification card for their official duties;
    • If an individual needs an identification card to use the transit system owned or operated by the town or country; or
    • If an employee of, or a student attending, an institution of higher education that contracts with the town or county needs an identification card for their job duties.
  • Specifies that an identification card issued by a city or village must clearly state “Not authorized for voting purposes” (Sec. 2).
  • Specifies that if a city or village issues an identification card it may not be used in the following instances (Sec. 2):
    • To prove residence;
    • To prove identification; or
    • To obtain public assistance benefits.
