Vote to pass a bill that authorizes parents to opt-out of standardized tests for their children

Highlights:

• Requires the state Board of Education to a develop a form which parents or guardians may sign and transmit to a principal or head teacher to opt their children out of prescribed statewide assessments (Sec. 2).

• Specifies that a lack of assessment results for a child may not be counted against a school or factored into the various school assessment and funding initiatives used by the state (Sec. 2).

• Authorizes school to use alternative assessments for students whose parents opt out in the following circumstances (Sec. 2):

• If the student is in the third grade, an alternative reading assessment to determine if the student may be promoted out of the third grade; or

• If the student attends a school that requires a certain score on a statewide assessments for high school graduation, an alternative assessment covering that portion of the graduation requirement.
