Title: Requires County Commissioners to Approve Bison Relocations

Vote to concur with Senate amendments and pass a bill that requires county commissioner approval for relocation of wild bison into the county.

Highlights:

  • Requires a board of county commissioners to review any proposal made by the Department of Livestock or the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks to authorize the relocation of any wild buffalo or wild bison into that county (Sec. 1).
  • Specifies that the provisions of this bill do not apply when relocation of wild buffalo or wild bison is to a qualified tribal entity (Sec. 1).
  • Prohibits a board of county commissioners from authorizing a wild buffalo or wild bison relocation into a county unless the following conditions are met (Sec. 1):
    • The animal is certified as brucellosis-free by the state veterinarian;
    • The board finds the relocation does not threaten the public health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of the county; and
    • The board finds the relocation is consistent with the elements of a growth policy found in Montana Code.
