Title: Requires Animal Shelters to Compile Monthly Reports

Vote to pass a bill that requires animal shelters to compile monthly reports that specify certain information relating to the animals housed in the shelter.

Highlights:

  • Requires an owner, operator, manager, or director of an “animal shelter” to compile a monthly report that includes certain information including, but not limited to, the following information (Sec. 3):
    • The number of animals of each species taken in;
    • The number of animals adopted, claimed, or transferred;
    • The number of animals euthanized; and
    • The costs incurred by the shelter for housing, feeding, euthanasia, and other expenses related to the care of the animals.
  • Defines “animal shelter” as a public or private facility which includes a physical structure that provides shelter to stray, abandoned, abused, or owner-surrendered animals that is operated, owned, or maintained by a municipality, county, animal welfare society, or other nonprofit organization for the purpose of promoting the welfare, protection, and humane treatment of animals (Sec. 2).
  • Specifies an animal shelter does not include an individual that provides temporary foster care to animals in his or her home, or an animal rescue group or sanctuary that shelters animals on an individual’s property (Sec. 2). 
  • Requires an animal shelter to make the report available electronically or on paper to the public upon request (Secs. 2 & 4).
