Title: Increases Minimum Wage

Vote to pass a bill that increases the minimum wage, effective August 1, 2013.

Highlights:

  • Requires any employer, whose annual gross volume of sales is $625,000 or more, to pay each employee wages at a rate as follows (Sec. 1):
    • $7.25 an hour, beginning August 1, 2013; 
    • $7.50 an hour, beginning August 1, 2014; and
    • $7.75 an hour, beginning August 1, 2015.
  • Increases the minimum wage that any employer is required to pay an employee under the age of 20 years during the first 90 consecutive days of employment from $4.90 an hour to $5.15 an hour (Sec. 1).
  • Requires any employer, whose annual gross volume of sales is $625,000 or more, to pay each employee under the age of 18 a wage at a rate of at least $7.25 an hour, except during the first 90 consecutive days of employment (Sec. 1).

  •  Requires any employer, whose annual gross volume of sales is $500,000 or more, to pay each employee wages at a rate of at least the following (Sec. 1):
    • $8 an hour, beginning August 1, 2013;
    • $9 an hour, beginning August 1, 2014; and
    • $9.50 an hour, beginning August 1, 2015. 
  • Requires any employer, whose annual gross volume of sales is less than $500,000, to pay each employee wages at a rate of at least the following (Sec. 1):
    • $7 an hour, beginning August 1, 2013;
    • $8 an hour, beginning August 1, 2014; and
    • $8.50 an hour, beginning August 1, 2015. 
  • Increases the minimum wage that any employer is required to pay an employee under the age of 20 years during the first 90 consecutive days of employment from $4.90 an hour to the following (Sec. 1):
    • $6.50 an hour, beginning August 1, 2013;
    • $7.50 an hour, beginning August 1, 2014; and
    • $8 an hour, beginning August 1, 2015. 
  • Requires the minimum wage rate for all employees of any employer beginning January 1, 2016 and each year thereafter to be increased from the previous 12 month period by the lesser of the following (Sec. 1):
    • 2.5 percent, rounded to the nearest cent; or
    • The percentage increase in the rate of inflation. 
  • Decreases the maximum weekly hours an employee can work before overtime compensation is required from 48 hours to 40 hours (Sec. 3).
  • Specifies that, notwithstanding the overtime compensation provisions of this bill, hourly individuals employed in agriculture are required to be given overtime compensation for employment in excess of 48 hours per week (Sec. 6).
  • Specifies that the overtime compensation provision for agricultural employment expires on February 1, 2014 (Sec. 6).
  • Increases the maximum length of unpaid leave of absence an employee is authorized to have for pregnancy and parenting from 6 weeks to 12 weeks (Sec. 7).
