Vote to pass a bill that prohibits unions from requiring a deduction of pay from a member's paycheck for political purposes.
- Prohibits a labor organization from using any dues, fees, or money which is deducted from a member’s paycheck for the purpose of engaging in “partisan or political purposes” (Sec. 1).
- Defines “partisan or political purposes” as an act which directly or indirectly influences a person to vote for or against any candidate for public office at any caucus, political convention, primary, or election (Sec. 1).
- Prohibits a union from requiring any monetary contribution as a condition of membership in the union to any of the following (Sec. 1):
- a candidate;
- a campaign committee;
- a political action committee (PAC); and
- a political party or political fund.
- Requires a union that wishes to make expenditures for partisan or political purposes to establish a voluntary and separate political fund using a PAC (Sec. 1).
- Specifies that no provisions of this bill preclude a labor organization from making expenditures of union dues to communicate directly with its own members about political candidates or political issues (Sec. 1).
