Vote to pass a bill that authorizes tax credits to companies who employ homeless individuals, effective from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017.

Highlights:

  • Authorizes a corporation to claim the following tax credits if the corporation hires a homeless individual (Sec. 1):
    • For the first 6 months of employment:
      • $500 for each homeless individual who works at least 20 hours per week; or
      • $1000 for each homeless individual who works for at least 40 hours per week; and
    • For the following 6 months of employment:
      • $500 for each homeless individual who works at least 20 hours per week; or
      • $1000 for each homeless individual who works for at least 40 hours per week.
  • Defines “homeless person” as an individual whose primary nighttime residence is a permanent housing, permanent supportive, or transitional facility (Sec. 1).
  • Defines “permanent housing, permanent supportive, or transitional facility” as a facility located within the state that provides supervision of facility residents and has the following characteristics (Sec. 1):
    • A publicly or privately operated shelter designed to provide temporary living accommodations and receives federal homeless assistance funding; or
    • An emergency shelter that receives homeless assistance funding from a county, city, or town.
  • Requires the corporation to retain documentation stating that the homeless individual resided at the homeless facility at the time the corporation hired the individual (Sec. 1).
