Title: Requires Photo Identification to Vote

Vote to adopt an amendment to HB 4123 that requires individuals to present photo identification prior to voting.

Highlights:

  • Requires voters to provide “valid photo identification” when voting in elections, whereas existing law allows voters to cast a ballot without any identification (Sec. 76).
  • Defines “valid photo identification” as a document that (Sec. 76):
    • Shows the name of the voter and the name conforms to the name on the voter's registration;
    • Shows a photograph of the voter;
    • Shows an expiration date;
    • Is not expired; and
    • Was issued by the commonwealth of Massachusetts or the government of the United States.
  • Authorizes a voter, without valid photo identification, to cast a provisional ballot and provide identification to the clerk or elections board of their municipality within 8 business days or forfeit the vote (Sec. 76).
