Vote to adopt an amendment to HB 1301 that requires health insurers to cover transabdominal ultrasound imaging prior to an abortion.

Highlights:

  • Requires health insurers to include patient coverage for transabdominal ultrasound imaging for the purpose of determining gestational age prior to an abortion procedure.
  • Exempts the following types of insurance policies from the provisions of this bill:
    • Short-term travel;
    • Accident only;
    • Limited or specific disease;
    • Individual conversion policies or contracts; and
    • Medicare policies or similar state or federal government plans.
  • Requires insurance coverage for transabdominal ultrasound imaging to apply to state employees, local government employees, local officers, teachers, retirees, and the dependents of these employees.
  • Appropriates $3.1 million to fund ultrasound imaging for uninsured Virginians, to be distributed by the Secretary of Health and Human Resources.
  • Prohibits payment or reimbursement to facilities that perform 5 or more first trimester abortions per month, with the exception of academic medical centers and inpatient hospitals.
