Title: Amends Redistricting Requirements

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that submits a constitutional amendment to the voters that amends the requirements for state and federal redistricting.

Highlights:

  • Requires a county to be given as many whole districts as its population can sustain before it is divided (Sec. 1).
  • Requires the General Assembly to complete redistricting by April 15 or continue in session without pay until redistricting legislation is completed (Sec. 1).

NOTE: AN AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION REQUIRES THREE-FIFTHS APPROVAL IN EACH CHAMBER FOR PASSAGE. IT MUST THEN BE APPROVED BY A MAJORITY OF CITIZENS VOTING IN THE NEXT ELECTION TO BECOME ENACTED.

NOTE: THIS IS A SUBSTITUTE BILL, MEANING THE LANGUAGE OF THE ORIGINAL BILL HAS BEEN REPLACED. THE DEGREE TO WHICH THE SUBSTITUTE BILL TEXT DIFFERS FROM THE PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE TEXT CAN VARY GREATLY.
