Title: Authorizes Home-Schooled Students to Participate in Interscholastic Programs

Vote to pass a bill that authorizes home-schooled students to participate in public school interscholastic programs if they meet certain requirements.

Highlights:

  • Authorizes a home-schooled student to participate in interscholastic athletic programs at the public school corresponding to his or her attendance zone if the student meets all of the following requirements (Sec. 1):
  • The student has been receiving home instruction for at least 2 years and is making satisfactory progress;
  • The student is under 19 years of age on August 1 of the current school year;
  • The student is entitled to free education in a public school;
  • The student receives no compensation for participating in the activity; and
  • The student complies with all rules applicable to high school athletes.
  • Authorizes public schools to charge home-schooled students “reasonable fees” to cover the cost of their participation in interscholastic programs (Sec. 1).
  • Specifies that the provisions of this bill will expire on June 30, 2017 (Sec. 2).
