Title: Requires Paid Sick Leave

Vote to pass a bill that requires employers to provide paid sick leave to service workers, effective January 1, 2012.

Highlights:

  • Requires employers to provide paid sick leave annually to each of their “service workers” in the state (Sec. 2).
  • Defines “service worker” as an employee of a certain occupation including, but not limited to, the following (Sec. 1):
    • Social Workers;
    • Librarians;
    • Medical and Health Services Managers
    • Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics;
    • Nursing Aides, Orderlies and Attendants;
    • Cooks, Bartenders, Dishwashers, Waiters and Waitresses; and
    • Retail Salespersons.
  • Requires paid sick leave for “service workers” to begin to accrue starting January 1, 2012 (Sec. 2).
  • Requires paid sick leave to accrue at a rate of 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked, and that total sick leave shall not be more than 40 hours per calendar year (Sec. 2).
  • Authorizes “services workers” to roll over up to 40 hours of paid sick leave from 1 calendar year to the next (Sec. 2).
  • Requires employers to pay employees at a rate equal to or greater than their normal salary (Sec. 2).
