Title: Requires Photo Identification to Vote
Vote Smart's Synopsis:
Vote to pass a bill that requires voters to present photo identification prior to voting.
Requires a voter to provide valid photo identification prior to voting (Sec. 1).
Specifies that valid photo identification includes, but is not limited to, the following (Sec. 1):
An Alabama driver's license or non-driver identification card;
An Alabama voter identification card;
A United States passport;
An employee identification card issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the United States government;
A student or employee identification card issued by a public or private college, university, or postgraduate technical or professional school located within the state;
A United States military identification card; and
A tribal identification card.
Requires the Department of Public Safety to issue photo identification cards solely for the purpose of voting at no charge to individuals who have no valid photo identification (Sec. 1).
Requires voters using an absentee ballot to submit with the ballot a copy of one of the forms of identification for valid photo identification (Sec. 1).
Authorizes any voter to obtain one free photocopy of his or her valid photo identification prior to any election in this state for the purposes of voting (Sec. 1).
Specifies that a voter who is entitled to vote by absentee ballot pursuant to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, the Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act, or any other federal law is not required to provide identification prior to voting (Sec. 1).
Specifies that an individual required to present identification in accordance with this section who is unable to meet the identification requirements of this section shall be permitted to vote by a provisional ballot (Sec. 1).
