Voter Registration Information for District of Columbia


VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE
Must register to vote 30 days before the election.
When you register to vote, you may choose to be "affiliated" with a political party. The space for choosing a party affiliation is on your mail-in registration form.

QUALIFICATIONS
To register to vote in the District of Columbia, an individual must meet the following qualifications:

• Be a United States citizen
• Be a District of Columbia resident
• Be at least 18 years old by Election Day.
• Drivers License #, or last 4 digits of your social security
• Not in jail for a felony conviction
• Not have been judged "mentally incompetent" in a court of law.
• Do not claim the right to vote outside of DC

Can register to vote in person or obtain a mail-in application from:

• Fire houses
• Police stations
• District of Columbia Board of Elections and Ethics

WASHINGTON, D.C. ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Who Can Absentee Vote in Washington, D.C.?

A registered voter can vote absentee temporarily outside of D.C.if, permanent disability or handicap, temporary or permanent illness, confined to institution,religious reasons, uniformed or overseas citizen ; beginning January 1st for any election held in that year.

How Can I Acquire an Absentee Ballot?

IN PERSON:
Absentee ballot(s) can be cast in person in the office of the Board of Elections and Ethics (441 4th St., NW Suite#250) beginning 14 days before the election. During this period, the office is open Monday through Saturday, from 8:30 am to 4:45 pm The deadline for in person absentee voting is 4:45 pm the day before Election Day.

BY MAIL:
To receive an absentee ballot by mail, a voter must complete an application for Mail Absentee Ballot, available online here.

Emergency Absentee Ballots:
If a voter can not go to the polls on Election Day because of an accident or sudden illness that occurs during the week before the election, the voter may cast an emergency ballot. For details, call (202) 727-2525. An application for emergency absentee ballot can also be filled out online here.

How do I Return the Absentee Ballot and What is the Deadline?

If a voter chooses to mail in the completed ballot, it must be postmarked on or before Election Day. Return envelope must be signed in order for your vote to be counted.
If a voter chooses to hand-deliver the ballot to his polling place or to the Board of
Elections Office, it must be delivered no later than 8 p.m. on Election Day.
