Prior to today's meeting Congresswoman Sinema released the following statement: "I'm proud that several steps we called for to address the failures at the Phoenix VA are being implemented and that we have brought decision makers from community providers and veteran service organizations to the table to take immediate action to serve our veterans. "We're working to broaden the VA's use of existing and new community partnerships, a step essential to both reforming the VA system and providing immediate care to veterans failed by the Phoenix VA. I will continue to work until our veterans have access to both short-term and long-term care, and all Arizona veterans receive the care and benefits they have earned." Rep. Kyrsten Sinema Unknown

June 9, 2014 Today Congresswoman Sinema met with the Acting Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Sloan Gibson. Following the meeting, Sinema released this statement: Today I learned that 18 veterans died while awaiting care at the Phoenix VA, and that an additional 823 veterans who requested care were never contacted or received care from the VA, going back as far as 2009. The Phoenix VA has attempted contact at least twice with each of these veterans in the last 48 hours, however the fact that these veterans were never previously contacted is unacceptable. The recent actions the VA has taken to address the severe failures of the Phoenix VA are a step in the right direction. Several of these are actions we've called for over the past several weeks. We called on the VA to provide mobile clinics; there is now a mobile clinic outside the VA and two more will be added in the next two to three days. We requested the VA immediately contact these veterans to schedule appointments; the VA is working to contact each of the Arizona veterans awaiting care. We requested a review of Phoenix wait times and wait times nationally; the VA will release a full report Monday and monitoring will continue on an ongoing basis. We asked the VA to have social workers on staff in the Phoenix VA Hospital emergency room; there are now social workers that cover the ER 24/7. We called on the VA to leverage community partners and adjust their contracting, they are taking steps to do both. We've also asked the VA to participate in a meeting with community partners, they are participating today. But there is still very significant work to be done, which is why I presented the Acting Secretary with a specific plan to help the 3,923 Arizona veterans who need care immediately. We must take immediate action to hold VA leadership accountable, get all veterans in front of a doctor or specialist, leverage community partners, fix the scheduling system, and establish effective incentives and oversight at the VA to ensure this never happens again. "I will continue to push until these veterans have immediate access to both short-term and long-term care, and all Arizona veterans receive the care and benefits they have earned." Rep. Kyrsten Sinema Washington, DC

June 5, 2014 Today Congresswoman Sinema joined a majority of her colleagues in supporting H.R. 4457, the America's Small Business Tax Relief Act of 2014. Congresswoman Sinema released the following statement after passage of the bill: "Small businesses are the backbone of Arizona's economy. This bill allows companies like Arizona Hi-Lift to make investments and grow their business. "I will continue to work to provide small businesses with access to capital and the regulatory relief they need to create jobs and grow Arizona's economy." H.R. 4457 allows qualifying small businesses in Arizona, including Arizona Hi-Lift LLC, a construction equipment supplier located in Phoenix, to expense, or immediately deduct from income, up to $500,000 of business equipment costs. "Year to date I have purchased no equipment for my company. Last year I used the full 500k deduction," said Doug Click the President of Arizona Hi-Lift LLC. This much needed tax provision expired at the beginning of 2014. Providing small business tax relief will enable companies like Arizona Hi-Lift to again utilize the full depreciation deduction and invest in Arizona. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema Phoenix, AZ
