Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today questioned the Pentagon's top military commanders in Europe on plans to help combat the growing number of European citizens joining the Islamic State.

In a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, McCaskill questioned General Philip Breedlove, the Commander of U.S. European Command, about the Pentagon's plans to work with European allies to identify and prevent Europeans planning to join ISIS.

"What about Europeans leaving to fight for the Islamic State?" said McCaskill, a senior member of the Armed Services Committee. "Are there any specific actions that the U.S. European Command is taking to assist the effort of identifying [these individuals]? They have a much bigger problem than we do, in terms of citizens of Europe leaving to go and join the fight of ISIS. Is there any specific action that you all have taken in regards to this problem?"

In response, General Breedlove agreed to provide a full briefing on U.S. European Command actions to counter European citizens joining ISIS. McCaskill also discussed military efforts to handle the flood of refugees from northern Africa and the Middle East attempting to reach Europe, as well as discussed the rise of the Scottish National Party
