McCaskill Statement on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Press Release

Date: June 15, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill released the following statement today, in honor of the 10th annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day:

"Each year, elder abuse is a tragic reality for hundreds of thousands of American seniors and their loved ones. I encourage everyone to use today to increase our ability to spot, prevent, and raise awareness about elder abuse in our nation--so that current and future generations of seniors have the comfort and safety they deserve."

The Administration on Aging defines Elder Abuse as any known, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or family member that causes harm or serious risk to a vulnerable adult. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day began in 2006 to educate the public on understanding the warning signs of elder abuse. Activities and programs will be held worldwide to create visibility and promote awareness in hopes of increasing safety for victims of this abuse and create accountability for offenders.

McCaskill is the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
