In response to the House passage of H.R. 2048, the USA Freedom Act, Congressman Mike Bishop (MI-08) issued the following statement:
"The USA Freedom Act reforms the way surveillance programs operate in this country for the better. Just last week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled that the NSA's bulk data collection of Americans' phone records overreaches its legal authority granted in the Patriot Act. Now more than ever, it's clear something must change.
"This legislation reaffirms our Fourth Amendment rights as citizens by ending the government's bulk collection of metadata. It also enhances transparency with the courts and safeguards our national security at a time when we must remain especially vigilant. I applaud the work of my House Judiciary colleagues on this important concern."
