Senator Gary Peters Sworn in to U.S. Senate Today

Today, U.S. Senator Gary Peters was officially sworn in to the United States Senate. As he took his oath of office, Peters was joined by his wife, Colleen, his three children, Gary Jr., Madeleine, and Alana, his mother Madeleine Peters, his sister Genevieve Williams, and his niece Julie Williams. Peters took the oath on his mother's family bible, which she keeps by her bedside. Below is a photo of Senator Peters' swearing in:

"I am truly honored that the people of Michigan have entrusted me to represent them in the U.S. Senate," said Senator Peters. "My top priority will continue to be fighting for Michigan's middle class families and working with both parties to bring practical, commonsense problem-solving to Washington. In order to tackle the tough challenges facing our state and nation, we must put partisanship aside and work together to achieve solutions that reinvest in manufacturing, support small businesses, and strengthen our overall economy."

Peters, who previously served six years in the U.S. House of Representatives, has been appointed to four committees that will enable him to continue fighting for Michigan's middle class and create an economy that works for everyone -- Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee; Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee; and the Joint Economic Committee.

"In the coming weeks and months, I look forward to meeting with more folks across Michigan to hear about issues most concerning them," added Peters. "Being an aggressive advocate for Michigan means being out in the community and listening to our state's residents, and I will continue doing that as a Senator."

To that end, Peters will open two temporary offices this week in Washington DC and Detroit with another in Lansing opening later this month. In the coming months, Peters will be establish a permanent office in Washington DC as well as offices across Michigan with staff on hand to assist constituents who need help navigating the federal government.
