Congressman Doug Collins: "New DHS Immigration Policies Ignore the Law"

Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Congressman Doug Collins sent a letter today to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson on the recently announced DHS policy change that would create additional loopholes in immigration laws by allowing illegal immigrant family units to exploit the system simply by claiming credible fear of persecution.

"We don't want to make this country's illegal immigration problem worse by loosening existing laws to allow people to claim persecution in their home country, and then disappear before the real court proceedings get underway. We do not need to ignore the law to create loopholes for people who should not have been here in the first place. These new policies will incentivize families to make false claims to immigration authorities, because then they won't be a priority for deportation, detention, or enforcement. I would like Secretary Johnson to explain to me his reasoning for releasing these illegal immigrants from detention before their claims can be proven."
