Sen. Murkowski Welcomes Supreme Court Decision on EPA Rule

Statement

Date: June 29, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, today welcomed the United States Supreme Court decision on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) failure to consider the costs of compliance when making rules for electric utilities.

"The sweeping powers asserted by the EPA at issue in today's opinion could cost billions of dollars and impose unreasonably high costs on American families and businesses without making them any safer," Murkowski said. "It is heartening to hear that the court has reined in the EPA, especially on the issue of the costs of regulation. We need balance, and I hope today's opinion will lead to it."

The court's decision in Michigan et al v. EPA et al comes after multiple challenges to the EPA's new Mercury and Air Toxic Standards (MATS) rule that could raise electricity prices, reduce the reliability of the grid, cost jobs, and hurt the economy.
