Rep. Elizabeth Esty decried a proposed cut in federal biomedical research and development funding during a tour of Boehringer Ingelheim's U.S. headquarters in Danbury Wednesday.

The second-term congresswoman heard testimony from employees of the pharmaceutical company about the need for federal research funding.

"I heard directly from Connecticut workers about the importance of strong, predictable federal research funding and how the federal government can be a better partner in spurring innovation and helping life-saving medication reach families who need it most," Esty said in a prepared statement.

Esty, a member of the Research and Technology Subcommittee in Congress, toured Boehringer Ingelheim's $65 million Pilot Plant, which opened last week.

The Boehringer Ingelheim group is one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies, employing 2,800 people in Connecticut.
