Each year on Memorial Day, American citizens pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the defense of this nation.

Over half a million Americans have fought and died in uniform since our country declared its independence over two centuries ago. And while many memorials have been erected across Texas to honor those who have served, such as San Antonio's Municipal Auditorium and statues on the grounds of the State Capitol, we will never be able to pay our debt of gratitude to those courageous individuals.

As we take time this year to reflect on our fallen heroes, let us not forget to recognize the sacrifices our troops are currently making to ensure a safe future for this nation and the world.

Two years ago, the clock was ticking on President Bush's ultimatum for Saddam Hussein and his sons to leave Iraq within 48 hours. Today, the dictator who terrorized his own country for 35 years is behind bars.

Iraq is on a new course. In January, the Iraqi people exercised their right to choose a new government and elected a National Assembly. This representational body responded by selecting the country's first democratically elected president in more than 50 years. The first task of the new Iraqi government is to draft a constitution for approval in an October referendum and to prepare for a general election by December.

The Iraqi people are also taking a leading role in running their own affairs. Iraq's security forces continue to grow and hundreds of reconstruction projects, providing essential services like electricity and water, are under way. Schools have been refurbished, millions of text books have been printed and new hospitals are caring for the needy.

Our troops have done a remarkable job in their efforts to stabilize Iraq and bring freedom to its people. These soldiers have dedicated their lives to defending our freedoms. Some have fallen in this noble mission and their selfless acts must never be forgotten.

On this Memorial Day, consider taking a few moments to honor a deceased veteran in your family.

You can also pay tribute to a deceased veteran by placing a flag, a flower or a wreath beside their headstone. Doing this continues the spirit and history of Memorial Day, which originally marked a day when a community decorated the graves of its war dead with flowers.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, numerous cities around Texas and this nation will hold services and ceremonies to recognize brave souls dating back to the Revolutionary War. Flags will be flown high as symbols of American spirit, perseverance and pride. Attend an event and show your appreciation for America's heroes.
