Pitts Named Co-chair of Human Rights Commission

Press Release

Date: Feb. 3, 2015

Congressman Joe Pitts (PA-16) has been appointed the Republican co-chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission for the 114th Congress. The congressman has served as a member of the commission since its establishment in 2008. The Democratic co-chair of the commission is Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-02).

"In America we have the great gift of a government established to protect our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Many others worldwide live under governments who do not recognize these God-given rights. The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission is a strong voice for those living in oppression and I am honored to serve as its co-chair," said Congressman Pitts.

"I am particularly honored to share the leadership of the commission with Congressman McGovern," said Congressman Pitts. "We have worked together to promote human rights for many years now and I think there is much we can accomplish together. I look forward to sitting down with him soon and working out our agenda for the coming Congress."

"For years, Joe Pitts has been a strong and consistent champion in Congress for human rights," said Congressman McGovern. "It's great news that he will serve as the Republican Co-Chair of the Commission, and I look forward to continuing our work together to shine a light on human rights abuses around the world."
