Nolan Responds to President Obama's State of the Union Address

Statement

Date: Jan. 26, 2015

U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan today released the following statement in response to President Obama's State of the Union Address:

"The President's speech was all about making sure the middle class shares in the growth and the wealth created by this resurging economy -- rebuilding America from the bottom up and the middle out.

In essence - forget "Trickle down" economics -- it only works for the super rich. It's time to "Perkel Up." That's what the American Dream is all about -- a strong middle class with living wage jobs and benefits.

The President is saying:

Reform the tax code. Give middle class working families a break and require the super wealthy to pay their fair share like everybody else.

Give middle class students a good start with a couple of years of free community college if they're willing to work and study hard.

Give small businesses smart incentives to offer employees paid leave after the birth and adoption of a child.

And he's making it clear that a good idea doesn't require a party label. Republican or Democrat -- it's time for everyone to put their ideas on the table on a bipartisan basis so we can arrive at the best ways to ensure that the middle class can share in America's growing prosperity.

So all in all, tonight's speech was a good start -- an agenda I think the majority of Americans will welcome."
