Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker issued the following statement on the confirmation of Willie E. May as Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

"I am pleased that the U.S. Senate has confirmed Willie E. May to be the next Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards Technology and Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). I am confident in Willie's leadership and vision of NIST, having served as acting director since June 2014 and working at NIST for more than 40 years.

Willie has been a partner and champion in our efforts to strengthen America's manufacturing sector and promote innovation, key drivers to spurring economic growth, and core pillars of the Department's "Open for Business Agenda.' In addition to serving as a world-class research institute, NIST has taken the lead on several major Department of Commerce and Obama Administration priorities, including implementing a national network of manufacturing institutes and working with industry and other stakeholders to develop the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.

I look forward to continue working with Willie and the NIST team to strengthen American manufacturing, promote innovation and keep our businesses competitive in the 21st century global economy."
