Congressman Dan Kildee Calls on Parents and Community to Help to Prevent Child Abuse

Press Release

Date: April 24, 2015

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) today is wearing blue to join in the "Paint our Town Blue" initiative to raise awareness about child abuse prevention. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. A photo of Congressman Kildee wearing blue, along with his staff in both Washington, D.C. and Flint, can be viewed below.

"I'm proud to wear blue today to raise awareness of child abuse and call on everyone in our community -- parents, neighbors, business leaders -- to come together to prevent abuse," Congressman Kildee said. "The majority of child abuse cases are preventable, and together we can all work to build a stronger community where no child is abused or neglected."

Child abuse remains a hidden problem across the U.S. In 2013, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that an estimated 679,000 American children were victims of abuse. An additional 1,520 children were killed due to abuse and neglect.

Congressman Kildee is a champion for children in Congress. Before he was Congressman Kildee, one of his first jobs was working at Whaley Children's Center, where he helped children suffering from abuse and neglect. In Congress, he has introduced several pieces of legislation creating more opportunity for youth, including the Afterschool for America's Children Act, a bill which would secure funding for afterschool programs across the country so kids have a safe space to direct their energy and become more well-rounded students.
