GOVERNOR'S 9-11 MEMORIAL COMMISSION CONTINUES
PHONE DRIVE TO SUPPORT "LET FREEDOM RING"

Gov. Janet Napolitano's 9-11 Memorial Commission is continuing its efforts to raise money
to build a 9-11 Memorial at Wesley Bolin Plaza. The Commission has signed on Sleep America, a
successful Arizona-based mattress company, to assist in raising funds for the memorial, which will be
built to remember the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

From now until June 15, Sleep America, Bank of America and Bashas' stores statewide will be
celebrating "Let Freedom Ring" by collecting used cell phones that will be redeemed for money by the Governor's 9-11 Memorial Commission. Sleep America will tag a portion of their radio spot alerting listeners about the promotion, and will accept phones in all Phoenix and Tucson retail outlets.

"We're delighted to have these corporate partners involved," said Napolitano. "They will help ensure that future generations don't forget the tragedy of that day."

This first phase of fundraising, the collection of cell phones, began last year. Thus far, nearly 13,000
phones have been collected. Other funds will be raised through direct contributions to the memorial
fund. The United Phoenix Firefighters will also collect cell phones at firehouses throughout the county, and drop-off boxes will be located at all City of Phoenix offices, 38 state agency offices and the Phoenix Law Enforcement Agency. Cash donations will also be accepted on the Commission's website, www.az911memorial.com , through its affiliation with the Arizona Community Foundation.

"We look forward to the day that we can get started on the memorial," said Billy Shields, the executive director of the Commission. "Contributions, in the form of unused cell phones and cash, will help us get there."

Fundraising, design and planning for the memorial are being coordinated by the Governor's September 11th Memorial Commission, a 31-member panel charged with establishing the landmark. The Commission's goal is to collect 250,000 used cell phones and pagers that will cover about half the Memorial's estimated cost.
