Congresswoman Jackson Lee Applauds Sony Announcement That It Has Reversed Its Decision and Now Will Allow "The Interview" to be Shown in Theaters Around the Country

Statement

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the United States House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement in reference to the announcement by Sony that it will allow showings of the film, "The Interview":

"I applaud Sony's decision to authorize screenings of the film, and it is important to bear in mind that the First Amendment is sacrosanct; and is what separates the U.S. from repressive regimes the world over.

"As President Obama has made clear, we are a country that believes in free speech, and the right of artistic expression. The decision made by Sony and participating theaters allows people to make their own choices about the film, and I welcome that outcome.

"It is my hope that the principle of freedom for artists in any medium to produce satire and other works is not trampled upon--something that should hold true the world over."
