Gardner Votes for Energy Independence

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO) released the following statement on the Senate's passage of S.1, the legislation he co-sponsored to build the Keystone XL pipeline:

"I was proud to vote in favor of this bipartisan legislation today, and I'm excited a majority of my colleagues came together to pass it. There was vigorous debate on this bill; we had over thirty votes on amendments which were offered by members of both parties. That's more votes on amendments on this one bill than occurred in the Senate all last year.

"This is an important bill, and one that has unfortunately become overshadowed by the politics around it. This legislation would be a boon to our economy, create thousands of American jobs and take us another step towards North American energy independence. And, crucially, numerous studies from the U.S. Department of State have shown that it will have a minimal impact on our environment.

"It's unfortunate that the President has already threatened to veto this bipartisan legislation. But it is my sincere hope that when bipartisan majorities in both houses of Congress send the bill to his desk, he will change his mind and sign it."
