Reid Statement On Supreme Court Decision Protecting Pregnant Workers

Date: March 25, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement today after the Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision that employers must provide appropriate accommodations for pregnant women in the workplace:

"Today's ruling is good for American women and for hardworking families. I was proud to be a signatory of the amicus brief supporting Ms. Peggy Young in this case and in her fight to demand basic rights and accommodations for pregnant women. The Supreme Court's ruling establishes a basic standard of uniform and fair treatment for pregnant women in their workplace. And it makes certain that pregnant workers never have to make an unthinkable choice between their job and the health of her pregnancy.

"These rulings apply the same basic principles of fairness and equal opportunity that are central to the Americans with Disabilities Act to the needs of pregnant women and their physical limitations in the workplace during their pregnancy. More must be done however to ensure employers are providing these protections to their workers. I will continue to work to ensure that Congress does more to protect pregnant workers and ensure the health of their pregnancies."
