Statement by Senator John McCain

U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today released the following statement on his vote to fund the Department of Homeland Security:

"Over the last month, I have voted six times to stop President Obama's executive actions on immigration. I continue to believe that these actions represent an unconstitutional overreach. I agreed with the president when he said that issuing them was "not an option' because doing so would amount to "ignoring the law in a way that I think would be very difficult to defend legally.' And while the president himself has conceded these actions as unlawful at least 22 times in recent years, Senate Democrats continue to prevent us from passing a bill invalidating them.

"Immigration is an issue that must be debated and decided by the representatives of the people, not by executive fiat. I am encouraged by the recent federal district court order in Texas finding that President Obama exceeded his authority under the law with his latest executive action.

"At the same time, for the safety and security of the American people, and at a time of growing terrorist threats here at home and abroad, I believe we have a responsibility to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security."
