U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) this week co-sponsored the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, a bill introduced by Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Pat Roberts (R-KS) that would enact a permanent, government-wide prohibition of taxpayer funding for abortion. Currently, similar policies, such as the Hyde Amendment, require annual passage and do not apply to Obamacare. The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act would also mandate that all health insurance plans offered by Obamacare exchanges disclose coverage of elective abortion procedures and the abortion surcharge embedded into abortion-covering plans.

"Among the many serious problems with Obamacare is the fact that millions of American taxpayers are unknowingly forced to fund abortion services and abortion-covering health care plans," said Senator John McCain. "This legislation would put an end to all taxpayer-funded abortions and create more transparency, empowering pro-life Americans to have insurance plans consistent with their convictions. I have always been a strong pro-life supporter and for years I've fought for the rights of the millions of defenseless unborn children who cannot speak for themselves. I will continue to support a ban on taxpayer dollars being used to fund abortions."

In 2014, the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office issued a report showing that taxpayer dollars paid for more than 1,000 health insurance plans that included elective abortion.
