Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-02) today discussed the importance of America's alliance with Israel, in light of the nuclear threat Iran poses to the Middle East and the world.

Mullin's comments came after he attended the speech to the U.S. Congress Tuesday by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu spoke about his concerns regarding the ongoing nuclear agreement negotiations with Iran.

"We must continue to stand with our longtime friend and ally, Israel," said Mullin. "Iran's threat to Israel and the world is very real. I was very pleased that Prime Minister Netanyahu presented such a strong case to Congress about the risks of this administration's prospective agreement with Iran."

The Obama administration has completely lacked strong leadership in its negotiations with Iran over that nation's nuclear capabilities, Mullin said.

"Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism and any negotiations with that regime absolutely cannot be taken lightly," Mullin said. "The president's expectations of a country that cannot be trusted and his foreign policy will put many nations, including ours, at risk."

The prime minister's speech had been criticized in advance by the Obama administration.

Even Washington's most liberal newspaper said of the president's comments, "Such rhetoric will not satisfy those in and out of Congress who share Mr. Netanyahu's legitimate questions."

The second-term Oklahoma lawmaker agreed, echoing the publication's suggestion that the Obama administration should drop its political attacks on Israel and justify their plans to hold Iran's nuclear program accountable to the American public.

Many nations in the Middle East recognize only strength or weakness, Mullin noted. As parts of the Middle East and Africa fall into chaos, violence and terror, showing our continued strong support for Israel is critical.

"Helping Israel protect itself from Iran could not be more important," Mullin added. "And this must not be about politics. The stakes are far too high."

Israel and the United States have been steadfast partners for many years - sharing many common principles and values.

"Historically, the United States has had a very good relationship with Israel," Mullin said. "The Bible says those who stand with His people will be blessed."
