Renacci Urges Timely Review Of New Ohio Energy Projects

Press Release

Date: Jan. 21, 2015

Rep. Jim Renacci (OH-16) today voted in favor of H.R. 161, the Natural Gas Pipeline Permitting Reform Act. This bipartisan legislation expedites the federal review process for natural gas pipeline permit applications, while preserving the critical environmental review processes necessary for each natural gas pipeline project.

"Ohio is fortunate to be experiencing an energy renaissance that is having a ripple effect throughout our economy. The vast supply of accessible natural gas in Ohio continues to rise and we are experiencing rapid increases in production each year. In fact, in 2013 Ohio produced over 186 billion cubic feet of natural gas, up from 86 billion cubic feet in 2012, " said Renacci. "It is important that Washington red tape does not slow down the construction of the critical infrastructure required to transport this affordable resource safely and efficiently."

Specifically, the Natural Gas Pipeline Permitting Reform Act amends the Natural Gas Act to require that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approve or deny a pipeline certificate within twelve months of receiving the complete application.

Frank Macchiarola, executive vice president for government affairs at America's Natural Gas Alliance, stated, "Because of the abundant natural gas supply in the Utica shale, Ohio is uniquely positioned to take full advantage of America's shale revolution. The ability to build pipelines in Ohio and across the country is vitally important to realizing the economic and environmental benefits that accompany our nation's abundant natural gas resources. We commend the House for passing H.R.161, the Natural Gas Pipeline Permitting Reform Act."

Renacci added, "I was proud to support the Natural Gas Pipeline Permitting Reform Act, as it is crucial that our infrastructure keeps pace with production. By ensuring a timely review of new energy projects, Ohio will have the opportunity to maximize the benefits of the natural gas boom and capitalize on the job creation that comes with it."
