Rep. Walters Co-Sponsors Bill to Designate John Wayne Airport as a Port of Entry

Statement

Date: Feb. 26, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Transportation

U.S. Rep. Mimi Walters (CA-45) today released the following statement after joining Rep. Loretta Sanchez (CA-46) and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (CA-48) in introducing H.R. 1051 -- legislation to designate John Wayne Airport in Orange County as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) port of entry.

Said Rep. Mimi Walters, "As the only airport that directly serves Orange County's 3 million residents, John Wayne Airport is an important resource to its community and local businesses. By designating John Wayne as a port of entry, we are allowing the airport to attract and retain international air service, while also reducing excessive governmental fees for international travelers. I'm pleased to join my colleagues Rep. Sanchez and Rep. Rohrabacher in supporting this important bill for Orange County."

Said Rep. Loretta Sanchez, "John Wayne Airport is an international airport that deserves the official designation as a port of entry. I have raised this issue several times with the administration, but we have seen no progress. My bill mandates the Secretary of Homeland Security to designate John Wayne airport an official port of entry and remove it from the current "user-fees' system."
