Scott Statement on January Jobs Report

House Education and the Workforce Committee Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (D-VA) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that employers added 257,000 jobs last month. January's employment figures means the economy has now had a record 59 consecutive months of private sector job growth, resulting in the addition of 11.8 million new jobs.

"Today's jobs report is a sign that our economy is maintaining momentum and continuing to grow. Job creation over the last 12 months is stronger than it has been since 2000, and January capped off the best three-month span for job growth in 17 years.

"This news is encouraging, but we must do more to improve the economic security of working and middle-class families. All Americans should see our economy's success reflected in their paychecks. Unfortunately, people nationwide are still struggling, despite working harder and being more productive than ever.

"President Obama's budget released this week lays out a sound blueprint to strengthen the middle class. I look forward to working with my Congressional colleagues on these and other proposals to boost the economy, grow the paychecks of working families, and rebuild this country's robust middle class."
