Heck Supports Passage of Long-Term Funding Bill

Statement

Date: Dec. 12, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Joe Heck today released the following statement on his support for H.R. 83, Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015.

"During the 114th Congress Republicans will focus on enacting solutions to the challenges we face as a nation. We cannot do that if we are constantly working from CR to CR, shutdown threat to shutdown threat, re-fighting old battles. It is not a responsible way to govern and frankly, the American people deserve better.

"Passage of this bill achieves two important objectives. First, it funds critical government functions for eleven out of twelve annual appropriations bills for the remainder of this fiscal year and funds the Department of Homeland Security through February 27, 2015. This avoids any chance of a shutdown while reducing discretionary spending to pre-FY2008 levels while reining in the IRS and EPA, and increasing funding for the Veterans Administration. Second, it gives the House and Senate the opportunity to leverage having Republican majorities in both chambers in 2015 to address the President's most recent executive overreach on immigration: We simply do not have the votes right now to make any meaningful changes.

"The legislation also contains the defense appropriations bill which provides funding for our nation's security, military readiness, our troops and their families, and gives the Defense Department the resources it needs in the ongoing fight against ISIL.

"In addition, numerous Nevada priorities such as preventing the listing of the sage grouse, reauthorizing BrandUSA, funding Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT), protecting Nevada's fair share of career and technical education funding, and providing funding for implementing improvements to workforce development and job training programs were included in this bill."
