Brooks: LNG Expansion Creates Pathway to Economic Opportunity

Statement

Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks (R-IN5) released the following statement after voting in favor of House Resolution 351 -- the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Permitting Certainty and Transparency Act -- legislation that expedites the approval process for liquefied natural gas export permits:

"This legislation creates a pathway to economic opportunity for more Americans. Expanding LNG exporting will support up to 45,000 jobs by 2018. Moreover, it will ensure our allies abroad have access to the vital energy supplies they need. The world cannot rely on increasingly insular and unstable nations like Russia for its energy needs. America must cultivate a safe and reliable energy infrastructure that brings peace of mind to consumers at home and our allies abroad."

Right now, the Department of Energy (DOE) has only issued a final decision on 5 of 38 applications to export LNG to countries with which the U.S. does not have a Free Trade Agreement. H.R. 351 requires the DOE to review applications and reach a final decision within 30 days.
