Hagel Statement on Department of Defense BRAC List

U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) released the following statement today regarding Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's proposed list of recommended Base Realignments and Closures (BRAC):

"Secretary Rumsfeld's recommendations recognize the critically important roles of STRATCOM, the 55th Wing and the Nebraska National Guard as essential components of America's national defense capabilities. Secretary Rumsfeld has taken into consideration the plans of Nebraska's National Guard Adjutant General Gen. Roger Lempke to streamline and enhance our National Guard and Reserve capabilities.

The BRAC Commission will now begin evaluating Secretary Rumsfeld's recommendations. It is important that we make certain that all of America's military resources are being used efficiently and effectively. This means making tough choices about over capacity...bases that our military no longer needs for our national defense. These resources need to be applied where America needs them most. I support this process."
