Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) today released the following statement in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

"On this day that we set aside to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, it is important to remember the universal, spiritual ideals that motivated Dr. King. Accepting everyone as a child of God--regardless of race, gender, religion, or any other designation--is an understanding that Dr. King had in common with sages and saintly persons throughout history. It is this spiritual understanding, this spiritual love--which in Hawaii we call aloha spirit--that we should all strive to attain and live by.

"On my recent visit to India, I was honored and inspired to follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther King by visiting Raj Ghat, the burial place of Mahatma Gandhi.

"The potency of love, aloha, is the core message of both Dr. King and Mahatma Gandhi, as best described in Dr. King's own words: "As I delved deeper into the philosophy of Gandhi, my skepticism concerning the power of love gradually diminished, and I came to see for the first time its potency in the area of social reform.'"
