Reid Statement On December Employment Report

Statement

Date: Jan. 9, 2015

Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement today on the December employment report. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the economy added 252,000 jobs in December, while the unemployment rate dropped to 5.6 percent:

"Today's very strong jobs report marks the 58th consecutive month of private sector job growth and is consistent with the many encouraging signs over the past few months that our economy is gaining steam. The challenge now is to make sure that all Nevadans and working Americans feel the gains, not just special interests and the wealthiest one percent. To do that, Democrats and Republicans must put aside petty partisanship and work together to increase wages, improve mobility and ensure that a hard day's work results in a fair day's pay for both men and women.

"So far Republicans have shown that they have little interest in anything other than re-fighting old battles and launching knee-jerk opposition to anything President Obama supports. Republicans must remember that we are here to work for the middle class, not to score partisan political victories. The beginning of the new Congress has not been encouraging, but there is still plenty of time for Republicans to change course and work with Democrats to fight for working people instead of plotting an agenda that helps wealthy special interests to rig the game in their favor."
