Dear Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Reid:

I am writing today to urge you to bring legislation to the floors of the House and Senate before the adjournment of the 113th Congress to extend both the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) for veterans and active duty service members, and the Employer Wage Credit (EWC) for employees who are active duty members of the uniformed services. These are important tax credits that promote the hiring of veterans and service members while also providing a tangible benefit to American businesses.

Last year, following a veterans' listening tour of my region of Illinois, I introduced H.R. 3649, the Jobs for Heroes Act, which extends and expands both of these tax credits. The WOTC promotes hiring veterans and service members who have traditionally faced significant barriers to employment, while also allowing employers to reduce their income tax liability. Additionally, the EWC encourages businesses to continue to provide differential pay to our National Guard members or Reservists who have been called up to active duty.

On behalf of all the men and women who have risked their lives to protect our freedoms, I thank you in advance for your prompt consideration of this important request.

Sincerely,

Cheri Bustos
Member of Congress
