Rep. Engel Says Many Communities Are Still Recovering Post-Sandy

Statement

Date: Oct. 30, 2014
Location: Bronx, NY

Congressman Eliot Engel (NY-16) issued the following statement regarding the second anniversary of Hurricane Sandy:

"Superstorm Sandy swept through the East Coast two years ago, and parts of my congressional district are still recovering from the worst effects of the storm. Across the region, 117 people lost their lives and thousands more lost their homes. Our first responders displayed remarkable heroism, and entire communities worked together to meet the needs of their neighbors.

"I can only hope that Superstorm Sandy was a singular act of nature, but we have to be prepared for the next storm. Congress needs to act quickly and decisively in the face of future disasters. I am deeply disappointed that some of my Congressional colleagues delayed federal assistance for the post-Sandy recovery efforts. We cannot, nor should not, withhold aid to those who most need it.

"Even as we face our greatest challenges, our nation has always found a way to overcome adversity. There is still much work for us to do, and we are committing to doing it."
