In 2012, my friends over at the Green Party released an ambitious and comprehensive set of proposals they called the "Green New Deal" to address a whole host of issues from income inequality to voters' rights. You can read all about it here: http://www.gp.org/GreenNewDeal/ I salute their efforts. I feel the entire program deserves further study and serious consideration, but in the context of this race, I feel Section II is especially good. Don't believe in the false dichotomy being pushed by the fossil-fuel industry and their lapdogs in Washington--it isn't a choice between jobs and the environment. Quite the contrary: "Provid(ing) green jobs by enacting the Full Employment Program...will directly provide 16 million jobs in sustainable energy and energy efficiency retrofitting, mass transit and 'complete streets' that promote safe bike and pedestrian traffic, regional food systems based on sustainable organic agriculture, and clean manufacturing." In other words, this is one area in which American workers and the environmental movement can work together to both provide jobs today and a better tomorrow for our children.
