Press Release

Date: Oct. 2, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has made $3,038,593 in Livestock Forage payments to individual farmers and ranchers in five drought-stricken counties in Nevada's Fourth Congressional District. The payments help those affected to offset the cost of feed in areas where the forage had been reduced due to drought.

"Many areas in my district have been severely affected by drought this season; this assistance will directly assist local farmers and ranchers who need help," Horsford said. "Our farms and lands are incredibly important to our state. I am proud that we are able to work together to bring these funds to Nevada."

The five counties receiving funds were: Lyon ($1,243,221), White Pine ($786,805), Mineral ($535,336), Lincoln ($350,471), and Nye ($122,760).

Applications are being accepted by the USDA Farm Service Agency until January 30th. Interested farmers and ranchers can call the Farm Service Agency at 775-857-8500 for more information about the program.

In addition, Representative Horsford announced that the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) has awarded the Nevada Department of Agriculture with $301,441 to address the critical needs of the specialty crop industry through research and extension. The grants for 14 projects across Nevada were funded through the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI). SCRI supports the specialty crop industry by developing and disseminating science-based tools to address the needs of specific crops.

Both of these programs were authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill, which Representative Horsford supported.
