As Perdue Campaigns with Leading Washington Shutdown Proponents, Michelle Nunn Hosts Roundtable with Georgians Impacted By Government Shutdown

This weekend, David Perdue hits the campaign trail with Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, two of his friends from Washington who last year joined Perdue in cheering on the Government Shutdown that hurt Georgia. Perdue himself has said that his support for the shutdown "speaks for itself."

While Perdue was off with his Washington friends, Michelle Nunn, former CEO of the Points of Light Foundation and candidate for U.S. Senate, held a roundtable with Georgians impacted by last fall's government shutdown. She highlighted the impact of the 16-day shutdown that furloughed 77,000 Georgia workers and hurt our military bases and base communities.

"The government shutdown was a terrible time for our country and a huge burden on our hard working Georgia families, military base communities, and veterans here in Georgia," Nunn said. "I find it unfathomable that David Perdue supports the government shutdown, let alone is bringing its architect to campaign for him this weekend. I know the 77,000 furloughed Georgian workers, including thousands from our military installations and 6,000 Atlanta CDC workers, the squeezed Georgia farmers, and our veterans whose claims were delayed all deserve better. The individuals I spoke to today were just a few of the thousands of Georgians who had to deal with the Perdue-supported Ted Cruz shutdown, and we need to make sure we send a leader to Washington who will take our Georgia values with them."

Sharon Stokes, who joined the roundtable with Nunn today, discussed how her husband lost a defense contract due to the shutdown, hurting her family and our military readiness.

"I was shocked to hear that David Perdue supports the government shutdown, and even more shocked to learn that he was willing, let alone eager, to campaign with two orchestrators of the shutdown," Stokes said. "Our leaders need to have Georgia's best interest in mind, and we do not find that in David Perdue."
