Statement of Rep. Mike Pompeo on ISIS Vote

Statement

Date: Sept. 17, 2014
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

Rep. Mike Pompeo, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement following his vote in favor of taking action against ISIS.

"President Obama has continually refused to take the war on radical Islamic terrorism seriously--from ending our interrogation program in 2009 to trying to close Guantanamo Bay, to even releasing top Taliban commanders back into the field in a prisoner exchange that violated American law. Even when we captured Ahmed Abu Khatallah, one of the people behind the Benghazi attacks, the President insisted we try him in criminal court rather than interrogate him in an effort to win the war and save American lives. The prosecution is still having trouble putting together a case.

"Today, ISIS controls part of Iraq and is growing. This terrorist army has been able to do so because the President withdrew our forces from there far too early against the advice of his own advisers. They have killed Americans and called for violence against the United States. I believe that we have an obligation to meet that threat by taking steps that will keep America safe. We must send a clear message to the President that we expect him to do his job and annihilate this threat entirely."
