Press Release

Date: Aug. 27, 2014
Location: Tampa, FL

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Tampa/St. Petersburg, FL) announced today that Tampa Family Health Centers is one of only two recipients in Florida to receive a $250,000 grant through the Affordable Care Act to fund facility enhancements to support the Patient-Centered Medical Home model.

"The Patient-Centered Medical Home model encompasses team-based comprehensive and coordinated care, quality and safety, and most importantly, accessibility," U.S. Rep. Castor said. "In addition to improving health care access for our neighbors, this renovation project will also create jobs. Similar federal grants for construction and operations have helped Tampa Family Health Centers nearly double the number of its locations over the last five years, improving health care services to our neighbors while creating jobs in construction."

Today's $250,000 grant is part of $35.7 million awarded through the Affordable Care Act to 147 health centers throughout the country. A complete list of grant recipients is available: http://www.hrsa.gov/about/news/2014tables/pcmh/

Tampa Family Health Centers, Inc. has added six clinics since 2009 and now operates 13 locations, with two additional locations under construction. Under numerous programs championed by U.S. Rep. Castor -- such as the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act and the Affordable Care Act -- more than $23 million in federal funding has been awarded to Tampa Family Health Centers since FY2009 to build new locations, support facility enhancements and increase comprehensive health care services. Tampa Family Health Centers and community health centers throughout Florida played an active role in Affordable Care Act outreach and enrollment, helping Florida lead the nation in enrollment among states using the federal marketplace. In Florida, nearly 1 million individuals selected a health care plan during the 2013/2014 enrollment period, and the state also saw an increase of more than 223,000 in Medicaid/CHIP sign-ups during this same timeframe.

U.S. Rep. Castor serves on the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee, including the Health Subcommittee, and as a member helped craft the Affordable Care Act to ensure it works for Florida families. In addition, she championed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that infused $13 million for new and expanded community health centers in Tampa Bay, among other infrastructure projects that created jobs for middle-class neighbors.
